Development and test of a cost-efficient gridded ion thruster propulsion system for small satellites – IonJet

Abstract IonJet is an engineering model of a low-cost electric propulsion system for small satellites. Whereas the flow control subsystem based on MICROJET 2000 launched 2016 BIROS satellite, thruster novel gridded ion where neutralizer integrated in allowing simultaneous and electron extraction. This design allows reducing number components consequently costs complexity. The whole was successfully tested under vacuum conditions regarding ignition stable operation system. In performance tests, thrusts 1 mN could be achieved using Xe gas as propellant at total power consumption less than 50 W well specific impulses larger 1000 s, including neutralizer. addition, first tests with Kr were performed showing that same achievable thrust reduced to 55% – 68% Xe.
